Unfortunately, studies and other activities prevented me from posting for a long time. The imposition of martial law in Pakistan has led us into a dark and stormy new period. It is clear that the military regime is desperate.
Today I am to meet with local representatives of Amnesty International and talk about the situation faced by human-rights activists and political workers in Pakistan.
I’m developing a growing admiration for the stand taken by Fatima Bhutto. Her position is unequivocally anti-military and anti-imperialist, unlike her sell-out aunt (Benazir). I hope she’ll one day reclaim the PPP from the depths to which her aunt has led it, and join the fight to make a new, free Pakistan.
On my blog, I have criticized Benazir Bhutto in the harshest of terms. This has meant that some readers took offence and chided me for what they perceive as an immature divorce from the realities on the ground. I beg to differ with them.
The reality on the ground is this: Benazir Bhutto is the only political leader in Pakistan who controls a real mass party, i.e. the PPP. At this moment, she is the ONLY leader with the street power needed to truly confront the military regime, launch a mass movement for restoring democracy and lead Pakistan to a brighter future.
Instead, she dilly-dallies, talks of deals with the military and speaks the language of her new patrons in Washington.
In my humble opinion, if Benazir does not take the hard but logical choice of openly confronting the military regime and severing her cosy ties to the US establishment, she too will be consigned to the ash-heap of history.
In the meanwhile, here is what her niece Fatima Bhutto has to say, in her article for CounterPunch:
Aunt Benazir’s False Promises
The Dismantling of Pakistani Democracy
By FATIMA BHUTTO
Karachi.
We Pakistanis live in uncertain times. Emergency rule has been imposed for the 13th time in our short 60-year history. Thousands of lawyers have been arrested, some charged with sedition and treason; the chief justice has been deposed; and a draconian media law — shutting down all private news channels — has been drafted.
Perhaps the most bizarre part of this circus has been the hijacking of the democratic cause by my aunt, the twice-disgraced former prime minister, Benazir Bhutto. While she was hashing out a deal to share power with Gen. Pervez Musharraf last month, she repeatedly insisted that without her, democracy in Pakistan would be a lost cause. Now that the situation has changed, she’s saying that she wants Musharraf to step down and that she’d like to make a deal with his opponents — but still, she says, she’s the savior of democracy.
The reality, however, is that there is no one better placed to benefit from emergency rule than she is. Along with the leaders of prominent Islamic parties, she has been spared the violent retributions of emergency law. Yes, she now appears to be facing seven days of house arrest, but what does that really mean? While she was supposedly under house arrest at her Islamabad residence last week, 50 or so of her party members were comfortably allowed to join her. She addressed the media twice from her garden, protected by police given to her by the state, and was not reprimanded for holding a news conference. (By contrast, the very suggestion that they might hold a news conference has placed hundreds of other political activists under real arrest, in real jails.)
Ms. Bhutto’s political posturing is sheer pantomime. Her negotiations with the military and her unseemly willingness until just a few days ago to take part in Musharraf’s regime have signaled once and for all to the growing legions of fundamentalists across South Asia that democracy is just a guise for dictatorship.
It is widely believed that Ms. Bhutto lost both her governments on grounds of massive corruption. She and her husband, a man who came to be known in Pakistan as “Mr. 10%,” have been accused of stealing more than $1 billion from Pakistan’s treasury. She is appealing a money-laundering conviction by the Swiss courts involving about $11 million. Corruption cases in Britain and Spain are ongoing.
It was particularly unappealing of Ms. Bhutto to ask Musharraf to bypass the courts and drop the many corruption cases that still face her in Pakistan. He agreed, creating the odiously titled National Reconciliation Ordinance in order to do so. Her collaboration with him was so unsubtle that people on the streets are now calling her party, the Pakistan People’s Party, the Pervez People’s Party. Now she might like to distance herself, but it’s too late.
Why did Ms. Bhutto and her party cronies demand that her corruption cases be dropped, but not demand that the cases of activists jailed during the brutal regime of dictator Zia ul-Haq (from 1977 to 1988) not be quashed? What about the sanctity of the law? When her brother Mir Murtaza Bhutto — my father — returned to Pakistan in 1993, he faced 99 cases against him that had been brought by Zia’s military government. The cases all carried the death penalty. Yet even though his sister was serving as prime minister, he did not ask her to drop the cases. He returned, was arrested at the airport and spent the remaining years of his life clearing his name, legally and with confidence, in the courts of Pakistan.
Ms. Bhutto’s repeated promises to end fundamentalism and terrorism in Pakistan strain credulity because, after all, the Taliban government that ran Afghanistan was recognized by Pakistan under her last government — making Pakistan one of only three governments in the world to do so.
And I am suspicious of her talk of ensuring peace. My father was a member of Parliament and a vocal critic of his sister’s politics. He was killed outside our home in 1996 in a carefully planned police assassination while she was prime minister. There were 70 to 100 policemen at the scene, all the streetlights had been shut off and the roads were cordoned off. Six men were killed with my father. They were shot at point-blank range, suffered multiple bullet wounds and were left to bleed on the streets.
My father was Benazir’s younger brother. To this day, her role in his assassination has never been adequately answered, although the tribunal convened after his death under the leadership of three respected judges concluded that it could not have taken place without approval from a “much higher” political authority.
I have personal reasons to fear the danger that Ms. Bhutto’s presence in Pakistan brings, but I am not alone. The Islamists are waiting at the gate. They have been waiting for confirmation that the reforms for which the Pakistani people have been struggling have been a farce, propped up by the White House. Since Musharraf seized power in 1999, there has been an earnest grass-roots movement for democratic reform. The last thing we need is to be tied to a neocon agenda through a puppet “democrat” like Ms. Bhutto.
By supporting Ms. Bhutto, who talks of democracy while asking to be brought to power by a military dictator, the only thing that will be accomplished is the death of the nascent secular democratic movement in my country. Democratization will forever be de-legitimized, and our progress in enacting true reforms will be quashed. We Pakistanis are certain of this.
Fatima Bhutto is a Pakistani poet and writer. She is the daughter of Mir Murtaza Bhutto, who was killed in 1996 in Karachi when his sister, Benazir, was prime minister.
The PPP, unfortunately, has the wrong person to lead it.

Huh?!
She is going mad. She has not studied anything.
She along with her mother are going mad and are playing in the hands of an idiot, Arbab.
OK, so we have more of the typical Pakistani response here: instead of attacking her ideas, Sharjeel chooses to attack her person.
I certainly don’t think she’s clinically insane, and as for “studying”, it is completely irrelevant to our topic. As far as I know, however, she has a Masters degree from the SOAS in London.
But this is off the topic. What matters is her political stance.
And I don’t know which “Arbab” you’re referring to, and how Fatima Bhutto and her mother Ghinwa are playing into his hands.
Would you like to elaborate?
Oh hang on…you mean they’re playing into the hands of Arbab Ghulam Rahim?! The Chief Minister of Sindh ?!
Ghinwa Bhutto clearly ruled out an alliance with him:
http://thenews.jang.com.pk/print1.asp?id=76794
So how are Ghinwa Bhutto and Fatima Bhutto playing into his hands?
Fatima Bhutto maybe a writer, but she forgets at the same time, that we know what is it like to her. She is waging a personal war with Mohatarma Benazir Bhutto.
I’d disagree with person Sharjeel here who has said that she’s no degree from U.S. well this is how the majority of unawared people think in Pakistan. People like him/her are complex, he should be saying so because she is young woman and moreover of Sindhi-origin.
Well I would only say that she is doing as much as she can to defame Mohatarma Benazir Bhutto. This is the reason why she has chosen writing for papers. But let the world be not blind to her “we know its your personal war with Mohatarma.”
Sarfaraz Abbasi
Karachi-Pakistan
Sarfaraz, perhaps Fatima Bhutto is partly angry at Benazir for personal reasons, including the death of Murtaza Bhutto.
But remember that Murtaza himself always represented the more radical socialist trend within the PPP. So, in a way, Fatima Bhutto’s “personal” issue with Benazir is more of a political one.
I don’t think you should call it a political tussle between Bhutto and Fatima. If Fatima is politically fighting with Bhutto, then she needs to build up a party against Bhutto, infect there is already her step-mother’s party Shaheed Bhutto party, her party has not even won in Larkana city, where her step-mother is residing and you’re talking about whole of Pakistan.
You have no evidence Mr. Crimson to defend that Bhutto was really responsible for her father’s murder. Fatima has been proudly throwing mishap to Bhutto, whatever happens in Pakistan. Emergency, Martial Law, one wonders how can Bhutto be something that has ever happened bad to Pakistan as Fatima has stated in Taipei newspaper.
It means those General Zia Ul Haq, General Yahya, General Ayub Khan, General Musharraf are all the good ones, who ruled Pakistan for over decades, they didn’t take a penny out of treasury of Pakistan and Bhutto just in year and half of her government in power, took away every treasury. That’s so shocking for anyone with good sense.
Fatima needs to talk about agencies propagandas, Armed Forces unnecessary take-over of civilian governments. She needs to protest against Musharraf’s continuous hold of power on Pakistan. She wouldn’t dare go out because she knows the consequences. Fatima has not suffered anything as much as Bhutto had suffered, Her father was hanged, her younger brother was poisoned, her other younger brother was killed, her mother is suffering from Alzheimer.
Fatima, has been backing candidacy of Barak Obama for U.S presidential election, she’s this disclosed in her interview with a newspaper that Pakistani, back Barak Obama, how come she represents 160 million people, a man who attacked verbally Pakistan’s sovereignty by saying, “He will attack inside Pakistan against Al-Qaeda, even if Pakistan disapproves of it”. This to many citizens of Pakistan is betrayal by Fatima, to back a person of such mind. And you think she’s political.
She’s defined it in her comments in Taipei Newspaper that she would not enter politics as it’s not the time (I think it would be and has been the time in politics always) to enter politics. On the other hand she’s been campaigning for her step-mother’s election in upcoming election in January.
Fatima should file petition against Bhutto in Pakistani courts, if she thinks (this is why she has not attempted doing so) that courts would not bring her justice then she must go after those hurdles making justice not reaching her. Although Bhutto is not in power and this is the time she should see if Bhutto was responsible for her father’s death being in power that time, else who would come in between her justice this time Bhutto is not in power.
Why is it Mr. Crimson that you and I think that ours sisters are sensible and loving to us and Bhutto was not and that she was responsible to getting him killed?
Fatima has her step-brother Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Jr. she loves him a lot and cares about him, being a step-brother he is dear to her, whilst Bhutto and Murtaza Bhutto were bloodily-related brother and sisters.
Bhutto suffered at the hands of Murtaza Bhutto and Shahnawaz Bhutto, both of whom had created a terrorist organization to murder General Zia Ul Haq, their father’s murderer. General Zia tortured Bhutto and tried to make her confess links with Organization, which she never told. Whilst both Murtaza Bhutto and Shahnawaz Bhutto married and Murtaza had child i.e. Fatima Bhutto. Bhutto suffered in Pakistan fighting against martial-law and to bring democracy.
Fatima has not suffered house-arrest or general arrest due to any protests (which she has not held ever even against Emergency), she has not seen the scenario of martial-law (as Musharraf’s Martial-law was unlike the previous ones),she has not met any leaders of the world so, she should have an experience of politics, as Bhutto met Mao Zedong, George W Bush Sr. Indira Gandhi, Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford leaders of the world, when shewas just 17 years old along with her father on official tours. Even then it was shock for everybody in Pakistan and beyond to find Bhutto becoming Prime Minister of Pakistan at the age of 34 years.
Fatima doesn’t even call Larkana her own city where her roots come from, what could she bring to Pakistan. Egyptian President Nasser Gemal Abdul was born in Alexandria; he didn’t do government in Alexandria rather in Cairo.
Are you employed by Fatima to defend her here Mr. Crimson, I just feel so. Let’s be of view that neither you can impose what you have in your mind neither could I impose upon you that is in my mind. I’m not Bhutto’s party-worker yet I always have hailed PPP intelligent leaders of it like Martyr Zulfikar Ali Bhutto and Mohatarma Benazir Bhutto.

…………so now I realize why you were siding Fatima Bhutto so that’s it huh?
Yes, Fatima is the only hope for Pakistan from Bhutto family- she is the real Bhutto by blood and intellect. I am a regular reader of her articles and it’s hard to believe that she can have this oservation and intellect to write these articles. Her writings are based on very facts and concern of the welfare of masses. But before she walks in to the real field of politics, she has a lot of chalenges to face. Intellectual like Dr. Mubasher Hasan could be a very dependable guide but do not have enogh votes which counts in democracy and the people who have votes are not dependable at all. So please Fatima, take care of yourself first and then politics. We do not want to lose you for nothing. You can lead but lead the nation carefully and wisely. All the best, An unknown founder of PPP and a former PRO, Iranian Embassy, Saudi Arabia-piplaw@hotmail.com
FATIMA, a very talented young lady and BILAWAL, a priviliged young boy may lead the PPP if only Bhuttos have to do it.Although real Bhutos are PPP jialas-workers who always sacrify their life more than it’s feudals and drug lords leaders mostly included in central and federal committees/ councils. In 1967, the ppp was founded by talented people from all walks of life-the civil society, but fortunatly or unfortunatly party was headed by a feudal Z.A. Bhutto who was master of selling dreams to poor and oppressed people of the country. Poor and lower middle class played a role of worker for the party and organised it all over the country to grass root level. Later on all situation changed in 1977 when oppresser of the society, feudals were given way in the party and workers were ignored. Later on Z.A.Bhutto had paid a big price of his love for poors and was hanged by a general on instruction from other super powers. His young daughter replaced her gradually because of her talents of selling dreams like his father. She could not do any thing for oppressed people due to control democracy but his colleagues made hell of money and influence while in power. After military take over 1n 1999, she left for abroad and had learned lot of realities of the life and was anxious to do some thing for oppressed class of the country. But bad luck to poor people , she was assasinated mysteriously and lost her life. Now democratically PPP should have elected it’s leader and Iatazaz Ahsan, Shah Mehmud Qureshi, Yusaf Raza Gilani , Makhdoum Amin Fahim and Aftab Sherpao could have been very promising candidates to compete but there is no democracy no where in Pakistan so nomination brought Bilawal but it would have been much better to bring an other Bhutto, Fatima- a talented chrismatic in the fold to keep workers and oppressed people unite. This could have been done by Asif Zardari showing his GREATNESS and wiseness to nominate these two young Bhuttos in waiting list of leadership but unfortunatly Zardari did what a loving father should or could do- so nothing to discuss, let him deal with leadership of PPP and workers will be keep chanting jive jive Bhutto jive for decades to come. i completely agree with sarfaraz on this issue.Murtaza bhutto has made a lot of people in the establistment angry as his militant organisation killed many innocent people including young army officers who have nothing to do with Z.A.Bhutto’s hanging.Benazir was unhappy with his brothers actinvities FOR HER DEMOCRACY WAS THE BEST REVENGE and not the terrorist activities of AL-ZULFIQAR organisation headed by murtaza bhutto.acc. 2 GEN.NASIR-ULLAH-BABAR,establishment plotted to pitch him against BB and eventually killed him in a fake police enconter and the army took its revenge 4 the terrorist activities of his notorious AL-ZULFIQAR organisation.Fatima bhutto is in habit of cursing BB and her family HOW WOULD SHE JUSTIFY THE KILLING OF INNOCENT PEOPLE BY HER FATHER .would she li8ke 2 apologize with the grieving families.HER father became an agent of the then soviet union.he was funded by them .why he gone so mad after his father’s killing why didnt he fought politically like his sister Benazir.and now Fatima projects a pessimistic picture of Pakistan ,many a times calling our beloved country a failed state.WHY?HUHhhh? (even Fatima’s Afghan Mother was said 2 be an indian agent) .PAKISTAN Z NEVER GONNA BE A FAILED STATE.THE BLOOD OF THE BRAVEST DAUGHTER OF THIS SOIL (BB) IS NOT GONNA BE WASTED.SHE WAS A MOTHER OF 3 YOUNG CHILDREN WHOM SHE LEFT BEHIND ONLY TO FALL 4 AN ASSASSINS BULLET.my heart goes out 2 her brave children.LONG LIVE PAKISTAN.
